General Tips for Pomegranates

Storage temperatureRelative Humidity (RH)DurationPre-coolingSensitivity to ethyleneEthylene ProductionControlled Atmosphere
Storage temperature: 6° - 7° C
Relative Humidity (RH): 85%-90%
Duration: 2-4 months
Pre-cooling: Air cooling
Sensitivity to ethylene: Very low
Ethylene Production: Low
Controlled Atmosphere: Recommended

Storage Temperature: Recommended storage temperature is 6 °C – 7 °C.

Storage Duration: Recommended period is 2 – 4 months.

Air Circulation: Use inverter-type fans with digital control to ensure continuous, uniform airflow throughout the chamber 24/7.

Ozone: Installation of an ozone-generation device is recommended to reduce microbial load.

Controlled Atmosphere: Recommended gas composition: 2 % – 5 % O₂ and 3 % – 6 % CO₂. Controlled Atmosphere slows ripening and maintains flesh firmness for up to 180 days.

Dynamic Pre-Cooling: A detailed study of temperature absorption time and airflow velocity ensures uniform cooling to the product core.

Dynamic Cooling: Multi-point monitoring continuously regulates temperature, humidity, and gas levels across the entire chamber volume to maintain ideal storage conditions.

IMPORTANT TIPS
  • For post-harvest pest control, keep pomegranates at 20 °C for 2–3 days, then cool to 2 °C for 24 hours before transferring them to 6–7 °C storage.
  • Maintain a uniform temperature within the storage chambers — the use of Dynamic Cooling is essential.
  • Cooling should be achieved through low-velocity air circulation to prevent chilling damage.
  • Avoid temperatures below 6 °C, as they may cause cold injury.
  • Cold disinfestation is an effective post-harvest insect control method.
  • Maintain medium CO₂ levels (around 6 %) to preserve quality.
  • Use modified-atmosphere bags for extended shelf life.
  • Monitor sugar content at harvest — ideal value: 16 °Brix, measured with optical refractometers.
  • Disinfect cold-storage chambers thoroughly before use.
