General Tips for Figs

Storage temperatureRelative Humidity (RH)DurationPre-coolingSensitivity to ethyleneEthylene ProductionControlled Atmosphere
Storage temperature: 0° C
Relative Humidity (RH): 88%-92%
Duration: 1-3 weeks
Pre-cooling: Air cooling
Sensitivity to ethylene: Low
Ethylene Production: Medium
Controlled Atmosphere: Not recommended

Storage Temperature: Recommended storage temperature is 0 °C.

High Humidity: Use an air cooler with a low temperature differential (ΔT) between inlet and outlet air.

Storage Duration: Recommended period is between 1 and 3 weeks.

Controlled Atmosphere: Not recommended, as the storage life extension is minimal compared to total shelf life.

Ozone: Installation of an ozone-generation system is recommended to reduce microbial load.

Ventilation: Install a digitally controlled ventilation mechanism, designed according to specific airflow studies.

IMPORTANT TIPS
  • Rapid pre-cooling before commercial shipment and strict maintenance of the cold chain throughout all handling phases.
  • Ensure proper air recirculation inside the cold-storage chambers.
  • Maintain CO₂ concentration at around 15 %, which helps preserve fruit quality — higher than 25 % may cause flavor deterioration.
  • Ozone treatment is strongly recommended as an effective disinfectant against fungi, to which figs are naturally prone.
