General Tips for Figs
| Storage temperature | Relative Humidity (RH) | Duration | Pre-cooling | Sensitivity to ethylene | Ethylene Production | Controlled Atmosphere |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
Storage temperature:
0° C
|
Relative Humidity (RH):
88%-92%
|
Duration:
1-3 weeks
|
Pre-cooling:
Air cooling
|
Sensitivity to ethylene:
Low
|
Ethylene Production:
Medium
|
Controlled Atmosphere:
Not recommended
|
Storage Temperature: Recommended storage temperature is 0 °C. |
High Humidity: Use an air cooler with a low temperature differential (ΔT) between inlet and outlet air. |
Storage Duration: Recommended period is between 1 and 3 weeks. |
Controlled Atmosphere: Not recommended, as the storage life extension is minimal compared to total shelf life. |
Ozone: Installation of an ozone-generation system is recommended to reduce microbial load. |
Ventilation: Install a digitally controlled ventilation mechanism, designed according to specific airflow studies. |
IMPORTANT TIPS
- Rapid pre-cooling before commercial shipment and strict maintenance of the cold chain throughout all handling phases.
- Ensure proper air recirculation inside the cold-storage chambers.
- Maintain CO₂ concentration at around 15 %, which helps preserve fruit quality — higher than 25 % may cause flavor deterioration.
- Ozone treatment is strongly recommended as an effective disinfectant against fungi, to which figs are naturally prone.
