General Tips for Groundcherry (Physalis)

Storage temperatureRelative Humidity (RH)DurationPre-coolingSensitivity to ethyleneEthylene ProductionControlled Atmosphere
Storage temperature: 12° – 14° C
Relative Humidity (RH): 80%-85%
Duration: 3-4 weeks
Pre-cooling: Not required
Sensitivity to ethylene: Medium
Ethylene Production: Low
Controlled Atmosphere: Not recommended

Ventilation: Installation of a digitally controlled ventilation system to remove respiration gases and maintain uniform air quality within the storage chamber.

Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP): The use of special MAP bags is recommended, as it extends storage life and helps preserve fruit color, texture, and quality.

Pallet Arrangement: Maintain 5–10 cm spacing between pallets to promote proper air circulation and achieve consistent temperature throughout the chamber.

IMPORTANT TIPS
  • Do not store physalis with ethylene-producing fruits (e.g., apples, pears, peaches, nectarines), as this can cause unwanted color changes and stem detachment.
  • Remove ethylene through ventilation or absorbers.
  • Use Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) to extend shelf life and maintain quality.
  • Ensure gentle air circulation — low airflow speeds help avoid dehydration or bruising.
  • Avoid temperatures below the recommended range, as chilling injury may occur.
  • Store in well-ventilated containers that allow air to pass freely through the product.
  • Maintain adequate spacing between pallets and chamber walls for proper cold air movement.
